Self determination, the right for individuals to make their own decisions and to be treated with respect, is at the heart of both social work and MI. In child protection work this concept of parents in particular as active actors often becomes lost: they are treated as if they are problems to be solved rather than partners to be engaged.
MI provides one of the best descriptions of how to have more respectful and purposeful conversations with parents, even about difficult issues such as child abuse, alcohol or drug problems or violence.
