Tarrio told his supporters to continue pushing their cause in a message shared on his Telegram account Monday. He wrote: 'First, I want to thank the thousands of true American patriots who have offered prayers and support as I embark on this next chapter of my life. I am not worried and feel at peace with what I must do over the next five months. My message to them is simple, don't give up the ship. The Proud Boys also shared a lengthy statement condemning Tarrio's imprisonment, and asking for donations for his family.

They want to kill you, our patriotism, and cause the total erasure of our culture. Tarrio also shared a photo of himself in what appeared to be a Washington DC hotel room on Monday. Tarrio was arrested over that incident after returning to DC on January 4 - two days before the Capitol riot. He was found to be in possession of two empty high-capacity magazines banned in DC, and subsequently also charged over that too.

Tarrio's lengthy pre-jail statement blasted the 'activist judge' who jailed him, and claimed he was being punished 'for engaging in constitutionally protected free speech activities'. It also included a link to a 'support fund' to try and raise money for Tarrio's family 'during this difficult time. The statement said Tarrio and other Proud Boys 'were protesting the violent domestic terrorist organization known as Black Lives Matter, which is now a punishable offense. It continued: 'Meanwhile, BLM and Antifa continue to murder and maim, setting cities ablaze across America with no end in sight. Tarrio apologized for the flag-burning, pictured, in court, but claimed Monday his behavior was covered by his constitutional right to freedom of expression.

Tarrio, pictured in Portland in September , has been leader of the Proud Boys since Tarrio, pictured front in black with a megaphone, took to the streets of Portland to protest at far-left group Antifa's behavior in the Oregon city. Tarrio's Telegram account said the Miami native had spent the weekend with friends and family who'd traveled up the east coast to see him ahead of his incarceration. Cushenberry said Tarrio's behavior 'betrayed' the rights of Americans to 'peacefully assemble, protest and make his or her views known on issues. Tarrio - who has led the Proud Boys since - admitted two misdemeanors, destruction of property and the weapons charge. McInnes and the Proud Boys have described the group as a politically incorrect men's club for 'Western chauvinists' and deny affiliations with far-right extremist groups that overtly espouse racist and anti-Semitic views.

The Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center designated the Proud Boys as a hate group, saying that its members often spread 'outright bigotry' and 'anti-Muslim and misogynistic rhetoric' over the internet, and have posted social media pictures of themselves with prominent Holocaust deniers, white nationalists and 'known neo-Nazis. Proud Boys have been involved in a series of high-profile violent clashes at political events. Proud Boys members also have frequently clashed with counterprotesters at rallies in California and Oregon. Most recently, the group took part in the siege on the Capitol on January 6, where some members were seen breaking into the building. So why do people get upset when symbols are mishandled, treated disrespectfully, or damaged? Because symbols are not just isolated objects: symbols mean something to the people who understand and use them.

Bowing before a symbol, ignoring a symbol, and destroying a symbol all send messages about one's attitudes, interpretation, or beliefs regarding that symbol as well as what it represents. In a way, such actions are themselves symbols because what one does with respect to a symbol is symbolic of how they feel about that which is symbolized. Furthermore, because symbols are conventional, a symbols meaning is affected by how people relate to it. The more people treat a symbol respectfully, the more it may come to represent good things; the more people treat a symbol disrespectfully, the more it may come to represent negative things or at least cease to represent the positive ones. Which comes first, though? Does a symbol cease to represent positive things because of how people treat it or do people treat it poorly because it has already ceased to represent positive things?

This is the crux of the debate between opponents and supporters of bans on desecrating the American flag. Supporters say that desecration undermines the flags symbolic value; opponents say that desecration only occurs if or because its value has already been undermined and that it can only be restored by the behavior of those who disagree. Banning desecration of the flag is an attempt to use the law to enforce the first perspective. Because it avoids dealing with the possibility that the second may be true, that it is an illegitimate use of government power to short-circuit substantive debates about the nature of what the flag symbolizes: America and American power.

The entire point of bans on flag burning or desecration is to suppress the communication of interpretations of and attitudes towards the American flag which are inconsistent with the beliefs and attitudes of most Americans. It's the expression of a minority viewpoint about that which is being symbolized America which is at issue here, not the physical protection the symbol itself. Share Flipboard Email. Austin Cline.
